Chinese Drywall Injuries and Damages

In Mississippi, Chinese dry wall defects lead many homeowners to contact a personal injury law firm to help sort through the medical and financial issues that resulted. Why? In short, because a Chinese dry wall injury can happen to literally hundreds of thousands of people who live in the more than 100,000 homes, condominiums and apartments that were built with this defective product.

For background, no Mississippi Chinese dry wall injury occurred in 2003 or earlier. Beginning in 2004, there was a shortage of gypsum wallboard manufactured in the United States. The national housing boom of that time, coupled with the tremendous demand for rebuilt homes in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, led to even greater demand for the material. Some workers complained of a strong, sulfurous odor in the material at the time and reported some health effects from handling and storing it.

It is uncertain what happened in manufacturing, shipping or storage of the Mississippi Chinese drywall. Injury is the result, many believe, but the cause could theoretically be one of several things:

  • Drywall made with China-mined gypsum contained high levels of strontium
  • Manufacturing allowed the presence of bacteria that degrades iron and sulfur compounds
  • Water used in manufacturing may have contained fecal matter
  • There may be contaminants in the outer paper that coats the drywall, or the wallboard was treated with a fungicide
  • During shipping from China, salt water came in contact with the drywall

Consequences of Mississippi Chinese dry wall defect

According to University of New Orleans toxicologist Dr. Patricia Williams, toxins that are off-gassed from Chinese drywall may be dangerous to children in that it could affect bone growth. The effects of chronic, longer-term exposure are unknown, but the central nervous system (vision and other senses), kidneys, liver, the cardiovascular system and the skin could all be affected.

Because particulates from the defective drywall may actually cross-contaminate other parts of the home structure and personal objects in the home, remediation of an affected home may go beyond simple wallboard replacement. In other words, a Chinese dry wall injury could happen even after your homebuilder came in, ripped out all the old affected wallboard and replaced it with new, untainted wallboard.

Chinese drywall injury cases are best handled by a personal injury law firm, particularly one familiar with the complexities of home building, toxic materials, the law and legal recourse with the complex layers of parties in a lawsuit.
